The Charter Cities Institute (“CCI”) (on behalf of its partner, the African School of Economics – Zanzibar) (“ASE-Z”) and Zanzibar Research Centre for Socio-Economic and Policy Analysis (“ZRCP”) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) under which ASE-Z will work with ZRCP to promote the exchange of staff in programs for the mutual benefit of both institutions; collaboration in research and development, consultancy studies and policy analysis work; the exchange of data, academic materials, and publications; and mutual collaboration in entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities for various stakeholders, all furtherance of their mutual interest in the field of education and research.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Twahir Khalfan (Director of Research and Policy Engagement) for ZRCP, and by CCI’s Executive Director, Mr. Kurtis Lockhart

Specific goals of the MOU include:

  1. Government policy-related research: ZRCP & ASE-Z may work collaboratively in policy analysis and research in areas including economic transformation, good governance, and other topics that are a priority to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and/or that promote the prosperity of the Zanzibari people.
  2. Stakeholder convening: ZRCP and ASE-Z will collaborate on convening relevant stakeholders to policy roundtables, workshops, and other events for the discussion of topics important to Zanzibar’s economic development and to facilitate cross-government coordination and mobilizing the public and private actors to achieve policy goals and priorities.
  3. Roadmap: ZRCP and ASE-Z will periodically collaborate to create roadmaps for Zanzibar’s economic transformation and related activities. These roadmaps aid in prioritizing and sequencing necessary for effective policy implementation.

Said Mr. Lockhart on behalf of CCI, “This MOU symbolizes our shared commitment to advancing the prosperity of Tanzania. On behalf of the Charter Cities Institute and the African School of Economics, I express my sincere gratitude to the Zanzibar Research Centre for Socio-Economic and Policy Analysis for this exciting partnership and commitment.
